There are few motifs in Equestrian Jewelry that hold the same enduring charm and symbolism as the horseshoe. Evoking notions of luck, protection, and a forever elegance, horseshoe jewelry has captivated hearts and adorned necks, ears, and wrists for generations.

Horseshoes: Luck and Good Fortune

Horseshoes are the epitome of luck, protection and good fortune. But where did this symbolism originate? Over the centuries, stories emerged about why people all over the world believe in the luck of the humble Horseshoe.

Let’s start in Ireland with the tale of the Blacksmith and the Devil

As all tall tales begin…one day a blacksmith was hard at work in his shop forging horseshoes. And who should suddenly appear but the Devil, demanding his own shoes. The blacksmith, recognizing the Devil, takes a red-hot shoe out of his forge and nails it into the devil’s hooves.

Well, the Devil was in such excruciating pain that he ripped them off and swore never to go near a blacksmith again! And this the tradition of hanging a Horseshoe over the entrance of a home to ward off evil spirits was born!

And now the Power of Iron

This story has to do with the material that Horseshoes are made of (at the time). Iron was believed by early Europeans to have magical powers that could drive away evil. With lots tales of mischievous fairies and other magical creatures, Horseshoes, being made of iron obviously became a lucky charm.

Other legends told of witches being so afraid of iron Horseshoes that they travel by broomsticks instead of horseback! Glad we were able to clear that up.

The Magical Number 7

The number 7 is revered due to its frequent appearance in nature and life: seven days in the week, seven seas, seven continents, seven colors in the rainbow, seven musical notes, seven chakras, seven wonders of the world (I’ve managed to list seven sevens!)

Now while I found this explanation online I do have an issue with it as all the Horseshoes I know have actually 8 holes. Has the number of holes changes? Why the asymmetry? But then again it’s a wonderful idea to be able to link the association of Horseshoe’s lucky aura with the magical number 7.

How to Hang a Horseshoe

There are conflicting opinions on the correct way to hang a lucky Horseshoe. First, and the one I adhere to, is the upright U, heels up position to prevent good luck from spilling out. And then there is the upside down or heels down orientation where the luck and blessings are showered on those that pass beneath.

Either way it is customary to hang Horseshoes above doorways in the home to bring good luck and for the superstitious ward off evil.
